The Mets have made a very conscience effort to get young, and I am 100% here for it. As I said in JANUARY, there is no reason to not add a DH to this lineup. After The Mets seemed to have planted their flag in giving Vientos and Baty the most at bats they can this year to see if they can emerge as solid players moving forward, they decided to take a look at the DH market. And apparently, we are talking to the wrong JD.
You want to get JD Davis out? Throw a baseball 96 MPH. That’s it, you’ll strike him out. There is no world where this makes sense. Cohen doesn’t want to overspend and kill their draft position again – fair. We are going to use those dollars on someone who has failed in THREE organizations? Including this one?! I would much prefer allow Vientos to be the DH and hope he figures out how to hit a baseball. Maybe Baty will even learn how to elevate a baseball instead. Anything is better than JD Double D Davis Davis.
I have very little faith in Mark Vientos. But this front office put a ton of faith into him by not bringing in anyone else to compete with him. In my head, DJ Stewart would have served as that player. I will be dumbfounded at how quickly they switch up their philosophy for a BAD player.
Although, JD Davis is not a player who would be taking at bats away from someone like Drew Gilbert if he comes up at some point this year, but there would be a weird log jam. It would be a totally avoidable and unnecessary problem to have. Either go for the actual DH in JD Martinez or stick with what you have a ride the Vientos storm and hope he can figure it out.
Final thought: If we are going to add another player, my choice would be Jordan Montgomery to sure up the rotation a bit more.
