The New York Football Giants have their DC; The Defensive Coordinator for the Tennessee Titans since 2021, Shane Bowen. This is not a sexy hire. He was not their number 1 option and probably not even their number 2 option. This even feels underwhelming. But this is a good hire. The Titans have been a defense consistently allowing some of the least amount of points in the NFL since Bowen took over. He also has been working under Mike Vrabel who is one of the many coaches who yell at his staff – I know I know.. Giants Twitter told you Daboll is the only one who has ever done that.
It is difficult to look at that beard and think he will not be a quality coach. As a person who is nearly 30 and can not grow a beard, I am jealous of that face-flow. It is going to be exciting to see how this defense evolves and who he brings in as the OLB coach to get their hands on with Kayvon .. pause ..
Look at the jump the defense made after he took over in 2021! It is not a secret that Brian Daboll will be on a very hot seat if we have another let down of a season. Bringing in someone who has experience building a defensive scheme and calling plays successfully makes a ton of sense to me. Nothing would have gotten Daboll shipped out of town faster than bringing in a first time DC who falls flat on his face and gives us one of the worst defenses in football. .. Even though Wink gave us a bottom 10 ranked defense and half our fan base thinks he is irreplaceable.
Bowen is someone who will utilize every coverage he can depending on the team he is playing – this is something I LOVE. Wink was gonna wink regardless of who we were playing and it resulted in a few DISASTROUS games. Bowen very much leans towards cover 1 and cover 3 out of a 3-4 base defense – this makes bringing back McKinney priority number 1 this off-season. McKinney would flourish in this defense and go back to putting up the stats he did under Patrick Graham.
Again, not a sexy hire. But a solid hire who we can be excited about.
Daboll did not stop there. They brought in Tim Kelly to be their TE coach. It is hard to be upset about a TE coach imo – but he is someone who has experience as an OC and could be an internal candidate whenever Kafka leaves.
Important note: In an off-season where Brian Daboll gave off an impression of someone who can only work with “his guys” and he won’t be able to bring anyone in who doesn’t know him – Daboll has hired 5 people and none of them have ever crossed paths with Brian. Can we please stop saying he’s hard to work with now? There’s currently 1 person who gives evidence to that and he was interviewed for 1 job this off-season.
Daboll not hiring an OLB coach is also something I like. He was likely waiting for his DC to come in and have most of the say on who that will be. As long as it is someone who does not help lead an underground revolt against the head coach, I’ll say they’re an upgrade
