The Top Gun movies are amazing. The love, the death, the action. They are fucking badass and they have incredible characters with great story-lines. When they decided to make a sequel 35 years after the original, everyone was on board. The assumption was that it would not be as good as the first – which I do not think that it was. But it closed out Tom Cruise as Maverick PERFECTLY. The announcement of a third is TERRIFYING.
Money talks. After Top Gun: Maverick was a box office hit and made a gillion dollars, let’s run it back. This is the absolute worst part of Hollywood now. No original ideas, no nuance to film and leaning on titles that will essentially guarantee a profit. Crazy thought: Make good original movies.
As much as I will complain about this, you can bet the house that I will see this opening weekend. I fully expect to be letdown as this is as clear of a money grab as the third Star Wars Trilogy. I worry they do what Star Wars did and just completely discredit everything the first two trilogys were about. Disclaimer: I’m a Star Wars nerd. Anyway, Luke Skywalker in the third trilogy was not Luke Skywalker. Luke would not have just walked away because he taught an evil guy. My biggest fear is they make Tom Cruise a pussy – like Luke. I don’t know how exactly they will do it. But it feels like a certainty.
I see Tom Cruise doing things that make no sense to his character. Maybe there’s someone who comes in who is viewed as wreckless like he was and he has to calm them down. It will absolutely be a woman since that was the biggest critique by critics after Maverick came out. I do not give a fuck about that, but I will be annoyed if the entire movie is her showing him up. Nothing to do with her being a woman, but no one has shown up Maverick and have it workout. And that should not change. Maverick is an insane person, so if this movie he is having to tell someone to stop being insane – I’m going to lose my goddamn mind. There’s just no way that isn’t what happens.
