The New York Football Giants just may keep not seven, but EIGHT wide receivers on their 53-man roster to start the year.
I know – I know. That would be wild. Who would they Keep around? And Why? The case to keep 8 receivers is actually a pretty straight forward thought. They have Slayton, Hodgins, Campbell, Hyatt and Robinson who are the 5 absolute locks. Sterling Shepard is someone who has been talked about as a surprise cut. That would be WILD. So the two who I think make the team after them are Shepard and Beasley. Shep is the best receiver on the team and Beasley has been consistently working with the 1s during camp. Here is the issue, not 1 of those guys are special team players.
So who would the 8th guy be? I believe it will be Bryce Ford-Wheaton. The Giants gave him a big financial package for a UDFA who has the ability to play special teams and I do not think they will risk him getting picked up on waivers. Will he get meaningful offensive reps in games? Probably not. But he would get reps from the special teams side and get used to the game-day process in The NFL.
Ok, so we have 2 extra receivers. Where do we pick up those roster spots? ILB and RB. I see them carrying 3 running backs. Saquon, Gray and Brightwell. Because of Brightwells Special Teams ability, I predict Brieda to be that surprise cut. There is really only 3 ILBs who are good enough to get meaningful defensive reps: Okereke, McFadden and Beavers. They will carry Cam Brown also because he is a very good Special Teams player. So that is where I see the Giants getting those extra roster spots. I also would not be shocked if they carry 1 less offensive lineman. The depth is SO bad, that we would be able to replace whoever we lose – in the SHOCKING instance that someone gets claimed off waivers.
The eight receivers of Slayton, Hodgins, Campbell, Hyatt, Robinson, Shep, Beasley and BFW would be an absolute force to be wrecking with and just a massive upgrade over what we have been going into the season with over the last few years.
