James McCann Broke His Hand And The Mets May Need To Sign A Replacement

James McCann is expected to miss 6 weeks after breaking a bone in his hand. Buck Showalter hinte towards Tomas Nido playing a good chunk of the games during this time. Before we start talking about Alvarez, The Mets top prospect, he is slumping and was not expected to be called up this year. The Mets opted to call up Patrick Mazieka who had two walk-off hits for the club last year.

The Mets may want to look to trade a veteran catcher who will not demand too much in return. It is important to point out that the biggest blow will go to the pitching staff as James McCann has done a great job behind the plate. The only person that really comes to mind would be 33 year old Roberto Perez on the Pirates. Perez is currently hitting .233 and used to be Carrascos preferred catcher in Cleveland. He is also currently on the 10-day IL, so I would not expect Eppler to make a move for a guy on the IL.

In fact, I do not expect Eppler to make any kind of move. It seems like The Mets will be looking to make a splash at the deadline for another arm. The Mets have also sent away some of their top prospects, and Steve Cohen does not seem to want to send away any more. Nido has proven to be a very good defensive catcher. Him and McCann are both walking double plays, so as long as he can keep those down and Mazieka can be halfway decent defensively – we should be just find for the time being.
