There are some rumors that The New York Football Giants could be fielding calls for recent second overall pick Saquon Barkley. What should Joe Schoen be doing in this situation? In my opinion, Joe Schoen would be stupid to not at least listen to what people are offering. I did briefly talk about this in a recent post where I highlighted a few thing Justin Penik has mentioned around the potential of trading Saquon Barkley.
Okay lets talk about Saquon Barkley as a player. He has not been what we have expected of him and has spent more time on the sideline with injury than on the field. If Saquon does play 17 games this season and go back to being the player he was in his rookie season, He will be asking for a ton of money. Is paying an injury prone running back a good idea? I’d say no. I also do not like the narrative that The Giants would get a third round comp pick for him because that would require him to play 17 games in back to back seasons, which is a long stretch given his history. I will ask this – What team has extending a Running Back worked out for? Saints are screwed – Panthers are screwed – Vikings are eh – Derek Henry isn’t on a mega contract, so I don’t count him. If The Giants do keep saquon and he has another season where he is in and out of the lineup and finishes the season with 700 yards – they will get nothing for him.
Okay, so now that we have established that after this season Saquons future with The Giants is a huge question mark anyway – especially considering this team is several years away from being a legitimate Super Bowl contender. What are some trade offers that I would be happy with. If we are to only get one individual pick, I wouldn’t want anything after day 2. If The Giants are able to land a third round pick on draft day or before this years draft, they should take it and use that pick to draft one of the many running backs projected to be taken that round.
I do think a team that is in a win now position would be willing to dish a third round selection for the former Rookie Of The Year. I also saw a few trade rumors including a later round draft pick and a young offensive lineman. They won’t land a standout lineman, but if they could bring in a player to battle with Shane Lemuiex and a 5th round selection that would be an excellent trade.
In conclusion, yes The Giants should be looking to dish Saquon Barkley and the 7.5Million cap saving doesn’t even have anything to do with it.
