Why The Giants Should Not Pursue a Trade For Russell Wilson

Russell Wilson is looking to be traded out of Seattle as the team seems to be on a drastic downtrend. Russell Wilson is 33 and would be turning 34 at the end of November. The Giants are in need of a ton of positions on the field before they can commit to trading draft picks and figuring out how to create the cap space for the large contract of Russell Wilson. The Giants offensive line is such a disaster and if they are unable to fix it, Russ will not be able to be the great player that he is.

Even if Russ does make us super bowl contenders, he has 2 more seasons on his contract and will more than likely look to retire after. The Giants would have mortgaged their future for a win now approach which they are in no position to do with the roster they currently have. The Giants should look to build the team correctly and try to have long-lasting success. If Russ wants to sign a short deal with The Giants after his contract expires, I would be more than okay with the Giants going all in for him. This is of course assuming our offensive line had been fixed for the most part and the defense is good. He could make an average receiving core good and if The Giants fix the offensive line, they just need a halfway competent running back to have a successful run game. He would be a good option to have a young guy sit under and learn from. But he is not someone who I want to trade for because of the current state of the team.

Overall, I can’t believe I had to write this and many Giant fans will get their hopes up to bring in a shortcut to MAYBE being good. It is still very important to point out that we could still be a fringe playoff team if the offensive line does not improve and we have to cut other players. Even if it guarantees a Super Bowl appearance in the next two years (Which it does not) I would not do it, unless The Giants can convince Seattle to pay most of the salary and get nothing in this draft. The Broncos will be able to pay the entire salary and are in a better position to offer more. Russ will not and SHOULD NOT be a New York Giant next year.
