Daniel Jones Could Be Out For The Season

It is possible that Daniel Jones could miss the remainder of the season and it is a pretty drastic understatement to say this is a bad thing for the organization right now. These last few weeks were crucial in the evaluation of Daniel as his third year comes to a close and we are still left not knowing what he is capable of. No matter if you believe Daniel Jones is the guy of the future or if you think he is terrible and we should trade him at the end of the season; this is a bad situation. Just in case my bias comes off – I will start with, I think Jones is good enough to be a Kirk Cousins type quarterback if he plays in the right situation. Good enough to bring a team to the playoffs, but not good enough to make a push. He just needs a fresh start

Let’s start with, you think he’s the guy. Okay, Daniel Jones has not showed enough in the last two seasons to give him a big contract extension. He has improved in the spots we needed to see improvement, but has seemed to regress in the Red Zone and has missed a lot of time with injury because he doesn’t give up on plays and does not slide correctly. (Hamstring injury last year – Neck this year). Is it possible that this is because of horrible play calling by Jason Garrett? I believe that has a major factor, but we sadly just won’t know unless we give him another season to prove he can be the guy. Will The Giants give him another shot? It is tough to argue for a fourth season and will be even more difficult to give him a fifth year option. This would raise the chances of The Giants drafting a first round quarterback with a new GM coming in and Joe Judge feeling the heat from being on the hot seat. Forcing a quarterback pick is not a good idea and is a big reason we are in the situation we are in right now.

On the bright side for that thought, it will be very tough to get a good package for Jones via trade meaning there is a very good chance he will be back for a fourth season. As I said two sentences to go, there will be a difficult argument to give Jones a fifth year option. Meaning he will be going into a contract year and The Giants will have to let him walk and get nothing in return after the season. Sorry DJ Haters, you’re stuck with him on the roster another year. In my opinion, The Giants best move would be bringing in a guy to hold over the team while the team is built properly. It is very possible that guy could be Daniel. The two will compete for the starting position and I do actually think Jones would rise to the occasion and win most starting roles. Unless we get Wilson or Rodgers – but we aren’t so let’s just stop that.

Now let’s talk about Joe Judge. The fans are not happy with Judge right now and are calling for him to be fired. I do not believe he will be fired because that would mean The Giants fire 3 coaches in 6 seasons. Jones missing half of the season and the entire roster being rattled with injuries will hold The Maras back from pulling the trigger. They are about to lose a lot of games with Glennon and Fromm which will put the pressure on for next season. I did say he may want to force a quarterback pick to bring in a quarterback he can call his QB that could give him another couple years. I absolutely do not want the to draft a quarterback until the offensive line is at least league average.

So overall, no matter how you slice it. The only positive, is our first round draft pick might be higher. Jones will more than likely be back, but it will be difficult to argue to go into the season with him as the starter. If The Giants choose to want him a fifth season, that will probably have to be a franchise tag which will hold back next free agency. The entire Daniel Jones situation is just shot if he is unable to play the rest of the season. We are in for a rough couple months and a rough season next year.
